The new Alienware 18 laptop from Dell is enhancing its performance with a 4.4GHz Intel Core i7 chip! The company also announced an Alienware 17 laptop with the option of having Core i7 chips with clock speeds outshining the 4.0GHz threshold. It’s rare in laptops to have processors running at this frequency, other than in gaming laptops.
Having higher clock speeds help boost PC performance. That’s why gamers normally overclock CPUs to run faster. Intel and Advanced Micro Devices are always trying to beat each other with the best performance by increasing their desktop CPU clock speeds.
Chip makers, over the last decade, have focused more on putting more cores instead of advancing the clock speeds, to balance system performance and power consumption. Most laptop chips run between 1.4GHz and 3GHz, but most users don’t need 4GHz laptops. Gamers just like that extra performance to play their intense games!
Dell has now made the fastest mobile processor with the fourth-generation Intel Core i7-4940MX processor in the Alienware 18 that runs at 4.4GHz. With the Alienware 17 and it’s optional Core i7-4910MQ processor, runs a frequency of 4.1GHz. The 4.4GHz chip can cause a lot of heat within the laptop, but Dell made it to where the processor can fit in the laptop’s small frame. The laptops use chips based on the Haswell microarchitecture.
Intel said in a blog entry, “Alienware engineers really got creative and developed a new thermal solution to ensure reliable and cool operation in such a small system.”
The customizable Alienware 17 starts at $1,399. It has a 17.3-inch screen and also has the option of slower Core processors and an Nvidia graphics card. If you prefer 3D display, it’s also an option to think about.
The Alienware 18 starts at $2,099. It has an 18.4-inch screen and supports dual graphics Nvidia or Advanced Micro Devices graphics cards.
Both laptops support 32GB of RAM, but the battery life of the laptops wasn’t immediately available, but expect it to last a few hours. If you’re a hardcore gamer, I’d suggest paying the extra and going with the Alienware 18. Either laptop will definitely not be a disappointment.
