At CES in January, Lenovo was stealing the show with their brand new LaVie Z laptops. These laptops are the result of a collaboration with NEC, and are super light. Everyone in the tech world is talking about them because they are a real competitor to the Apple MacBook and, best of all, they are now available to order.
The new laptops from Lenovo are 0.7 inches thick, slightly thicker than the 0.52 inch MacBook. When you put them on a scale though, you see that the Lenovo is actually just bigger in size, actually weighing less than the MacBook. I also don’t think that the extra fraction of an inch is going to be noticed by anyone and if it is, it won’t matter. Lenovo accomplishes this by using magnesium-lithium as the material for the chassis, making these laptops lighter, but not one bit less durable.
The Lenovo LaVie Z also has a few other advantages over the Apple MacBook. The LaVie has a fifth generation Intel Core i7 processor, and the LaVie Z 360 edition even has a hinged display that can be folded a complete 360 degrees. It has a 2550 x 1440 13.3 inch screen, which is a higher resolution than the MacBook with the same screen size. The Macbook has a resolution of 2304 x 1440. And that is the new MacBook. Don’t even get me started on the MacBook Air. Get that out of here.

The one downside is that the LaVie Z can be a little more expensive than the MacBooks. But, you get what you pay for. This is the golden rule, even though we always try to cheat it, or find ways around it, or pretend like we can get more bang for our buck somewhere else… It still always ends up being true and coming back to bite us in the end. For only $100 more you get a way better processor, but the same amount of RAM (8GB) and the same amount of storage (256GB solid state drive).
The LaVie Z 360 weighs a few ounces more than the version that doesn’t have the rotating display, but either way, it is still light. And this just proves that Apple isn’t the only company that can make super thin notebooks for around that price. Lenovo has stepped up their game and created a computer that not only competes with the Apple MacBook, but even has a better processor. The fact that they could cram an Intel Core i7 into something that small is already incredible, and it’s also probably the only reason that it is a fraction of an inch thicker. I think that the unnoticeable difference in size is certainly worth the extra power. Good job, Lenovo.
