AMD hasn’t been doing too well lately, but that hasn’t kept the company from trying to dethrone Intel at every possible opportunity. The company’s latest attempt includes the realm of ultra-thin laptops, a realm where the Ultrabook design has had some difficulty gaining ground with the large portions of the notebook market. AMD’s latest attempt to take down Intel comes in the form of the Asus VivoBook U38N, which has officially cleared the FCC and should be coming to retailers very soon. The device features all of the trademarks of an Ultrabook, including the lightweight and super-slim design, along with a hybrid storage solution. TheRead More →

Intel recently demoed a new bit of technology that is poised to get rid of many of the connectors and cables that computers use to connect to a plethora of peripherals and other devices. Known as WiGig, the tech has been in development since 2009 and looks to replace cables by using a high-bandwidth, high frequency wireless data system. According to President of WiGig Alliance and Director of Millimeter Wave Technology at Intel Ali Sadri, “Since inception of the WiGig alliance back in 2009, we always had the vision that we need to develop a very high-throughput wireless technology that is capable of doing thingsRead More →

A government officer from Taiwan is warning local PC vendors of a new Apple patent for the MacBook Air that could be used in legal action in an attempt to stop the sales of Ultrabooks from competitive manufacturers. Apple has already tried this tactic on Samsung, attempting to halt sales of the company’s Galaxy Tab 10.1 and Galaxy Nexus smartphone. In both cases Apple has successfully halted sales of the devices in the United States. The Cupertino company received a U.S. patent last month for the exterior wedge-like design of its MacBook Air devices. Amazon has a curious laptop on its website, a completely unannounced 14″ Ultrabook from Dell known as the Dell XPS 14. Specifications for the device suggest that this Ultrabook could stand up against some of the other good ones on the market as it has an Ivy Bridge processor, Nvidia discrete graphics, an HD+ display and 12 hours of battery life. Dell did release an XPS 14 back in 2010 in hopes of reviving the company’s XPS line. Unfortunately, Dell discontinued the 14″ premium laptop last year. The old XPS 14 would have never been considered an Ultrabook, mainly because of its 1.4″ thickness. TheRead More →
