This is somewhat old news at this point, but MacBook Air rentals might soon become a thing of the past. It is no secret that the MacBook air is an aging design, and the updates brought to the 2016 model were nothing to cheer in the streets about. Unless Apple reveals some grand refresh of the MacBook Air model, MacBook Air’s may be devices of the past for two main reasons.
Apple discontinued the 11 Inch MacBook Air last year, which essentially shoots the entire Air lineup in the foot. The appeal of MacBook Air was always the lightweight, sleek design of the device, and cutting off the smaller variant of the Air effectively kills the main reason for why people would rent this device instead of getting a MacBook Pro rental or a Microsoft Surface rental.
So, what was the reasoning behind the discontinuation of the 11 inch MacBook Air? While Apple didn’t officially come out and say it, it is most likely because of the release of the 12-inch MacBook. During the event which unveiled the 12-inch MacBook model, the device was compared to the MacBook Air and unsurprisingly, the Air was outperformed.
It would be reasonable to keep the MacBook Air 11 inch model as part of the lineup if it was just outperformed. However, the 11 inch MacBook Air was more than just outperformed, it was also heavier than the 12 inch MacBook. The 12 inch MacBook weighs only 2 pounds, while the 11 inch MacBook Air weighed 2.4 pounds. It’s a little difficult to keep marketing something which was sold around the premise of being lightweight and compact, when there’s something even more lightweight and more powerful on the market.
Although the Apple Air line may be dying, it is important to note that MacBooks are not heavy devices at the moment anyway. Apple’s 12 inch Macbook is essentially the replacement for the 11 inch MacBook Air, as it is both lighter weight and more powerful. It will be interesting to see if Apple drives the final nail in the coffin of the MacBook Air line in 2017.
